Volunteer

House Manager

Sacred Heart House of Denver is staffed by volunteers from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. each evening and, additionally, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sundays.

Responsibilities include: answering the phone and door, giving emergency numbers to people calling for assistance and providing guidance for residents in accordance with house rules.

House Manager Volunteers are welcome to have dinner with residents at 6:00 p.m. Supportive interaction with residents is encouraged. School age children are welcome to accompany adult volunteers, and families are welcome to volunteer together. Adults must be at least 21 years old.

We suggest that volunteers give one night monthly before offering more.

Childcare

Sacred Heart House of Denver relies on volunteers to provide childcare on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Childcare volunteers care for all the children in the house from 6:45 pm – 8:15 pm while mothers attend living skills and parenting classes. Childcare volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Responsibilities include direct supervision of the children. Volunteers are encouraged to read, play games or do craft activities with them. Small groups are welcome to participate in this volunteer opportunity.

Dinner Program

Individuals, small groups or families with up to six people prepare a meal at home and bring it to Sacred Heart House of Denver by 5:30pm. Simple meals, like casseroles or meat dishes, accompanied by potatoes, rice or bread and a salad or vegetable, can easily be served buffet style. Dishes may be reheated between 5:30pm and 6pm, when dinner is served. Sacred Heart House can provide drinks and condiments. Desserts are optional. Meals are generally prepared for between 20 and 25 residents. (About 1/3 of them are children.) We encourage volunteers bringing the meal to join residents for dinner. Dinner volunteers may also occupy resident children after the meal, while their mothers perform required chores.

Special Projects for Groups

Since Sacred Heart House of Denver is relatively small in size, the best volunteer opportunities for large groups include making welcome bags with basic hygiene items for residents, birthday bags with cake/frosting mixes and party supplies for families in our Follow-Up Program or collecting non-perishable food or school supplies. Groups are encouraged to schedule enough time for a pre-arranged tour when they drop off the items they collected. Sacred Heart House of Denver is happy to supply a list of items necessary for the physical operation of the shelter, which include hygiene, medical, cleaning supplies and paper products, for group collections/drives. These are particularly good opportunities for girl scouts, boy scouts, youth groups, as well as small businesses, to support their community. Living Skills Classes

Individuals or small groups may present information on resources in the community or life skills to adult residents during informal classes on Tuesday or Thursday evenings between 7pm and 8pm.
